Join us for a movie, popcorn, and discussion on Friday, April 19 from 7:00-9:00pm. Based on actual events, the film we are watching (“Salt of the Earth”) explores a part of the history of race in America, and the treatment of Mexican Americans in the mining towns of New Mexico during the middle 20th century, from their point of view.  “Salt of the Earth” was banned during the McCarthy Era; as Lorenzo Torrez, one of the people involved with the film, put it: “The Hollywood monopolies would never allow it to be shown. They said it would cause ‘racial disturbances’.” The lead actress was deported to Mexico after the filming, and received an international film award. Not Rated. In English, with some dialog in Spanish. If you have questions, contact Rev. Bob Renjilian: [email protected].
