Youth Ministry & Religious Education (RE) Program Coordinator

First Unitarian Church of Rochester—a progressive, inclusive, and engaged congregation—seeks a part-time (15 hrs/week) Youth Ministry & Religious Education (RE) Program Coordinator. This 10-month position (August 15–June 15) includes Sunday mornings, at least two weekday evenings per month, regular weekly in-office hours, and 1–2 late/overnight events.

Position Overview:

The role supports the spiritual growth and community engagement of children and youth (primarily grades K–12) through program coordination, volunteer support, and direct leadership. The coordinator reports to the Director of Religious Education and plays a key role in building a welcoming, organized, and safe environment for children and families.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the structure and content of Youth Group (grades 9–12), including two Sunday morning and one evening gathering per month
  • Plan and supervise Youth events beyond regular meetings, including off-site activities and overnights
  • Support RE teachers (grades K-8) and youth advisors: scheduling/confirming volunteers, managing student registration, prepping/sourcing materials, maintaining supplies
  • Maintain accurate records in Church Center (registrations, attendance, rosters, etc.)
  • Coordinate special RE programs and events, including Our Whole Lives (OWL), teacher trainings, multigenerational activities, parent meetings and social justice initiatives
  • Communicate regularly with families, volunteers, and the broader congregation
  • Recruit, train, and support volunteers including advisors, parent helpers, and chaperones
  • Promote youth involvement in congregational life and foster a safe, inclusive, and spiritually enriching environment
  • Ensure compliance with Child & Youth Safety policies
  • Attend staff meetings and RE committee sessions as needed

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years working with children, youth, and volunteers
  • Technologically facile (familiarity with or willingness to learn database like Church Center)
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills
  • Familiarity with and commitment to Unitarian Universalist values
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to complete training)
  • Background check required
